Second son of Major Rowland Brinckman, Limpley-Stoke, Wiltshire, and relative of Sir Theodore Francis Brinckman, third baronet.

Lieutenant Brinckman was born in March, 1896, and was educated at Bruton and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was gazetted to the 3rd Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers in October 1914, and was temporarily promoted in December of the same year. He was formerly stationed at Ebrington Barracks, Londonderry.
