Son of George R. Thompson, Gobnascale / 35, Strand Road, Londonderry. Husband of Margaret P. Thompson, Gortinure, New Buildings, Londonderry.

William John Thompson served and fought with the 10th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in the Somme advance of July 1916. He received his commission from the ranks of the Derry Regiment U.V.F., in May 1917, after he had served in France for a considerable time, and was appointed to the 6th Battalion Royal Inniskillings. He was specially mentioned in despatches for the gallant way in which he led his company in the attack on Gaza.
