Company Sergeant Major Carson was awarded a bar to his Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry in the field two days before he met his death. He was the son of Sergeant Major Carson, who was for years stationed at the Inniskillings' depot in Omagh. Joining the Inniskillings in 1901, he went out to South Africa with a draft just too late for the South African War. He returned to Ireland with the 1st Battalion Inniskillings, which had earned fresh laurels in Natal and the Transvaal, and served during its tour of duty in Londonderry and Belfast. He served at Gallipoli, and was wounded in France on July 1, 1916.
