Son of Mrs Mary Jane Cartin, 7, Ferguson Street, Derry.

Twelve months before Edward Cartin's death, his brother, James, of the Royal Irish Regiment, was killed in action. Edward Cartin was previously wounded in action on April 29, 1916, and spent time in hospital recovering. He was again wounded in action in France on September 3, 1916, and spent time in hospital in Manchester recovering. He was also seriously wounded around November 1917, and spent time recovering in hospital in Egypt.

Shortly after the death of Edward Cartin, members of his family had the following lines ? also in memory of his brother, James ? inserted in a Derry newspaper:

'O, Immaculate Heart of Mary,

On them your prayers extol,

O, Sacred Heart of Jesus,

Have mercy on their souls.'
