Son of Mr W. J. Best, Malabar Hill, Bombay. Brother of Mr J. G. Best, J.P., Greenville, Ballymoney.

Lieutenant Colonel Best was well known in Londonderry, where he was married in 1904, to Amy Maria, daughter of Mr T. B. Montgomery, formerly resident agent in Londonderry of the Hon. the Irish Society. He served in the South African War, being severely wounded at the battle of Colenso, and was awarded the Queen's Medal with five clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps. On the outbreak of the Great War he joined a battalion of the Inniskillings, and accompanied it to the Dardanelles, being wounded at the fighting which followed the ill-fated Suvla Bay landing.
