Private Boyle, who was unmarried, was a reserve man, and had been in Flanders since the outbreak of the First World War. His nephew, Lance Corporal Patrick Flood, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, and son of Anthony Flood, 100, Bogside, Derry, was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the field. Lance Corporal Flood originally joined the Irish Brigade from the service of the Melville Hotel in December 1914, and went to France in February 1916. Around May 1916 he was admitted to No.3 General Hospital at Le Treport suffering from the effects of gas poisoning. He was reported killed on August 16, 1917, but was later found to be alive and well and a prisoner of war in Germany.
