Lieutenant Colonel Nicholson - a recipient of the Distinguished Service Order and Bar - was the eldest of four brothers, of whom the two youngest – Second Lieutenant Bruce Hills Nicholson, Royal Fusiliers, and Sub Lieutenant Victor Hills Nicholson, R.N. – died in 1917. In 1912 he married Ethel Frances, daughter of Mr Cecil Henry, Drumlamph, County Londonderry.
